The project is lead by Baltic Sea 2020 and aims to put forth a needed environmental perspective to the fisheries management through integrating environment and fisheries issues in the coming reform of the Common European Fisheries Policy (CFP).
The project will follow and support the political processes that contribute to improved management of the Baltic Sea and its resources. The project duration is until 2013 when the new legislative proposal has been adopted. One of these processes is the EU Baltic Sea Strategy which was launched during the Swedish presidency and aims to strengthen integration between numerous policy areas in the Baltic Sea region.
Background
The EU Baltic Sea Strategy contains different areas of concern and interest in the Baltic Sea region. Two of these present measures to improve the Baltic Sea ecosystem. The first area, environment, is lead by Germany and aims to carry through measures that will protect marine biodiversity. The second area, agriculture, forestry and fishery, contains issues that will contribute to strengthening sustainable use of resources. This area will be lead by Finland with support from Sweden (on fisheries).
