Baltic Sea 2020 is a private, independent foundation aimed at stimulating concrete measures which improve the environmental quality of the Baltic Sea. The assets of the foundation will finance projects that are creative, innovative and improve knowledge of the Baltic Sea. The capital will be used continuously until 2020, hence the name of the foundation. The foundation is not affiliated with any government or private organization.
Baltic Sea 2020 acts based on present knowledge and on which actions are with high probability good and almost certainly not negative for the Baltic Sea. Baltic Sea 2020 will judge its success - or failure, by how many meaningful measures the foundation has been able to contribute to or promote by the year 2020. The trademark for the foundation is the ability to act, carry through initiatives and ensure that decisions are taken.
Focus areasImprove the Baltic Sea environmentThe foundation would like to contribute with actions and measures based on best available knowledge of the Baltic Sea environment. Currently the majority of the work is done in the areas of eutrophication and fisheries. Read more about the projects in our focus areas.
Increase public awareness through media and advocacy activities in the Baltic regionTo limit our daily influence on the marine environment- public interest, understanding and engagement needs to be increased. Politicians and decision makers need access to relevant material about the Baltic sea environment and its challenges. The existing European fisheries and agricultural policy contribute to substantial negative effects on the Baltic Sea environment and fish stocks. Baltic Sea 2020 aims to inform and influence the public opinion, decision makers and politicians. Read more about our public awareness and advocacy projects here.
ProjectsSince the foundation was established in 2005 and work begun in 2006 the Board has financed more than 40 projects for approximately 100 MSEK. 25 of these projects were completed by the end of 2009. The figures below show how the allocated funds have been distributed based on either project type or focus area.
