Position - FisheriesBaltic Sea 2020 work to cost-effectively improve the Baltic Sea environmental quality by ensuring that the amount of cod is allowed to increase. Cod is the most important predatory fish in the Baltic marine ecosystem. When too much cod is taken from the sea, the link between the species in the food chain is altered. Where the cod have been fished out sprat has increased, which resulted in reduced quantities of zooplankton, which contributed to an increase in phytoplankton = algal blooms. To achieve this objective, Baltic Sea 2020 have put together important data, monitor relevant policy processes and maintain regular dialogue with policy makers and officials in the Baltic region and in Brussels. In the area of "Fisheries", the Foundation has produced a number of policy position papers that focus on:

In particular, focus on reducing leakage from point sources, such as industrialized animal farms.
