PROPOSAL Baltic Sea 2020s proposal report for cost effective management measures of manure from pig production has been received by the EU PDF Print E-mail

Our latest report (Cost Effective Phosphorus Management Measures, June 2010) describe cost effective management measures to reduce nutrient leaching, with a focus on phosphorus, from intensive pig production. The report provides concrete measures that should be practised throughout the region and regulated in national and European legislation. The proposed management measures, combined with the use of cost-effective manure management techniques, can help countries in the region to achieve their national commitments to the HELCOM Baltic Sea Action Plan, and the objectives of the EU IPPC Directive (Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control). The report has been sent to the EU and we have received positive feedback.

Background

Large amounts of nutrients is leaking from intensive animal production farms unless the manure is managed in a responsible and careful manner. Baltic Sea 2020 has established a long term program (Intensive Pig Production Programme, IPPP) to investigate, demonstrate and disseminate knowledge on best available techniques for handling large amounts of manure.
